10 Tips to Landing Your First Post-Grad Job

1. Be prepared. Make sure to research the company before your interview - go to their website, Vault, your career services office, etc.

2. Dress professionally- wear a suit unless you are told otherwise. It is much better to be overdressed than under. Also, don’t wear heavy perfumes or cologne.

3. Don’t lie. If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t pretend like you do. Just be honest. The interviewer can usually tell if you are faking it.

4. Ask questions. Don’t be hesitant to jump in. Do ask about your opportunity for growth and advancement within the organization…just don’t expect that you are going to be promoted to CEO within the first year.

5. Keep your resume to a page, make sure to spell-check and regular plain white paper is fine. The rule is 1 page for every 10 years of work experience. No one needs to hear about your Boy/Girl Scout medal from 5th grade.

6. Be quantitative. Instead of stating “Designed a customer service database” say “Designed a database that served over 10,000 customers and increased company sales by 50%.”

7. Go to information sessions before interviews, even if it’s optional. If you are available and have been invited, attend the presentation. It shows you are interested and will also usually give you insight into the how the interviews will be conducted.

8. Don’t be afraid to follow-up, but don’t harass the recruiter. Send a thank-you note after your interview; you can even call. Just don’t be a stalker, they will get back to you if interested.

9. Remember that everything you do is leaving an impression- from the initial meeting at the career fair up until your offer. Use a strong hand shake and leave a professional message on your voicemail.

10. Try to relax and be confident! You do have something to offer.

An Open Letter to UMBC in Praise of the Marvelous Inclement Weather Policy

I saw this on the UMBC blog and thought I would share.....

Dear UMBC,

I hit a car on the way home from school today. Thanks. No, seriously. Thanks. The entire state of Maryland was just being a little overly cautious when schools statewide decided to cancel classes today due to the inclement weather. They sure were overreacting. I’m glad that the caring, helpful administration at UMBC was able to see past the three inches of laying snowfall and ignore the continuing downpour of snow and other wintry precipitations in the name of higher education. And boy, did I learn a lot on this ever so important second day of classes. I really feel that I gained some of the most helpful insights of my nearly-complete college career in the 15 minutes it took for my professors to hand out their syllabi today. I’m sure there was no other way my teachers could have gotten these ever-so-important class materials into my possession, and am grateful that the UMBC administration realized this.
From my numerous peers who were also able to experience the true joy of the ice and snow which blanketed campus today, a big kudos! While many had no previous experience figure skating, most seemed appreciative of their blissful moments of ice-aided twisting, twirling, and tumbling. After witnessing such feats of awe and wonder, it is my thought that UMBC should greatly consider a figure skating team.
Again, I’d just like to say thank you in advance for the new passenger door and side panels. I also would like to forward a big old “thanks” from a fellow UMBC senior who is able to share in this cornucopia of good fortune. I have been awarded the rare opportunity to purchase him a new rear end for his car. These are truly blessed and generous times in which we live.

Thanks,Kevin
